7 Fat Loss Strategies For Busy Moms

Jul 21, 2008 in Fitness, Health

7 Fat Loss Strategies For Busy Moms
By Holly Rigsby, CPT
fityummymummy.com

Would you like to “jump start” your metabolism and lose your ‘mommy belly’ once and for all? If so, the following seven tips are exactly what you need to improve your workouts and ignite your metabolism. Try some or all of these tips, but beware, the result may be a number of admiring second glances and the need to pull your ‘skinny jeans’ out of the closet.

1. The majority of your workouts should be composed of free-weight, bodyweight or cable exercises.

Compared to machines, free-weight, bodyweight and cable movements often require more skill, create muscular balance, and have a greater metabolic cost. For example, it is more difficult to balance the weights, and to coordinate muscles when performing free-weight exercises. Although this may sound like a disadvantage, it is actually a benefit. By balancing and stabilizing free-weights or cables you are working more muscles through a greater range of motion resulting in more muscles developed and more calories burned.

2. Use exercises that work more than one muscle at a time.

When focusing on fat loss, you can’t worry about “shaping” exercises, instead you should use exercises that’ll get you the biggest bang for your buck and work as many muscles as possible. Isolation exercises can be used at the end of a workout to work on a specific target area, but they just serve to supplement your core movements.

Virtually every savvy fitness professional is privy to the fact that compound exercises recruit the most muscle groups for any given body part.

If you seek lean, toned muscles and the increase in metabolism that comes with them, you must choose exercises that work as many different muscles as possible. One of the main reasons why squats are superior to leg extensions for improving your body is that they also work your butt, hamstrings and inner thighs in addition to toning your quadriceps while leg extensions focus on just the front of your thigh and don’t really offer any other benefit. That same rationale hold true for arm exercises too. That’s why dumbell presses and dips will are more valuable for your arms than triceps kickbacks and pushdowns.

A good rule of thumb is to use movements that will allow you to use the most weight. These will have a systemic effect on your body that’ll help maintain or increase your lean muscle, and in turn ignite your metabolism.

3. Pair exercises.

Pair your exercises together so that you alternate between upper-body exercises and lower-body exercises or between exercises that target opposing muscle groups (e.g. chest and back).

This type of approach will keep your workouts short and efficient by eliminating much of the downtime that comes between sets of a single exercise since you are working on one movement while resting from another. This approach can also yield huge benefits in your mission to burn fat. Since you’ll constantly be moving and keeping your heart rate elevated, you’ll be burning far more calories than you would during a typical workout.

4. Keep your reps between 8 and 12.

Through research, it has been determined that the best range for building lean muscle is roughly between 8-12 reps. Since the main focus of your resistance training efforts is to gain lean body mass and stimulate your metabolism, this rep range fills the bill perfectly. “High reps for tone and fat loss” is one of the biggest (and most unproductive) training myths! Somehow the aerobics, yoga and Pilates’ community have convinced us that when we perform bodyweight exercises or light resistance training for high reps, our muscles magically take on a beautiful shape without growing or bulging. On the other hand, if you challenge yourself with moderately heavy weights, your body will take on a bulky, unflattering appearance. If you believe this, you probably still believe in the Tooth Fairy!

5. Rest only 30 to 60 seconds between sets.

When you keep the rest periods under one minute, it’s easier to stay focused on the task at hand and keeps your heart rate elevated. In addition, it forces your muscles to recover more quickly between sets, along with keeping your nervous system revved up.

If your first movement in an upper/lower body pair is squats, you might want to rest 60 seconds before attempting your second movement. However, if your first exercise is a fairly “easy” exercise, like lat pull downs, you might only wish to wait 30 seconds before doing the second part of the pair.

6. Perform total body workouts.

You must drop the notion that muscle groups work independently of one another. Muscles work together and should be trained that way. Besides, not only does this approach mean less time in the gym, but by working the whole body three times per week, you’ll be maximizing the fat burning effect of your program.

7. Cardio is not the cure-all for fat loss.

Cardiovascular exercise aids in the creation of a caloric deficit, but the caloric expenditure during cardio is temporary. Strength training addresses the core of the problem by permanently increasing the rate at which the body burns calories by adding muscle. The best programs will include both strength training and cardiovascular training, but the core or the programs effectiveness is resistance training.

Take these strategies and incorporate them into your workout routine. Not only will you save a lot of time, but you’ll also soon see a leaner and more toned body. Not to mention a few more turned heads and the re-emergence of your skinny jeans.

The H Miracle - Cure Hemorrhoids Naturally

Jul 21, 2008 in Health

The H Miracle - Cure Hemorrhoids Naturally

Today, I wanted to alert you to something will afflict 40% of the adult population (or more) at some point of their lives. It’s called hemorrhoids or piles and it’s basically any form of vein inflammation around the lower rectal regions.

Blood on your toilet paper? Itching in your anus area? Pain during constipation? All of these are likely signs that you may have hemorrhoids and it’s no laughing matter – because although common, they can be annoying and embarrassing.

In the more severe stages, they can fall out like a lump outside your bottom. So what are some common mistakes that people make which contribute to developing this common condition? Even if you have these already, avoiding the following 3 mistakes can start relieving the problem gradually.

Mistake #1:  Eating too much processed food

This can be a toughie for some people. However, it’s known that processed foods create harder stool and troubles in digestion. This creates constipation and other issues which can lead to hemorrhoids. The key here, especially when you are suffering and trying to cure hemorrhoids, is to lower your intake of processed sugars and foods.

Mistake #2: Sedentary lifestyle

A lot of long term sitting can create additional pressure on the bottom area and this invokes the perfect environment for a hemorrhoid to occur if combined with a sharp force such as constipation or pregnancy (in women). The solution is to make sure you do not sit for over 1 hour at a time, and remember to do stretches that promote healthy blood flow.

Mistake #3: Intake of processed medication and creams

This creates the same potential problem as processed foods. Even many of the fiber supplements contain processed and artificial elements that can create side-effects elsewhere… and lastly they are not even attacking the root of the problem here.

The other downside of these creams which do no benefit is that they waste one’s time and the hemorrhoid can get worse over time if the root problem is not reversed.

So try to avoid these 3 mistakes and you will not be contributing to any worsening of hemorrhoids. It’s very important to understand these in our modern lifestyle of sedentary office work and processed, convenient diets.

How to permanently cure your Yeast Infection for good!

Jun 17, 2008 in Health

How to permanently cure your Yeast Infection for good!
Yeast Infection Secret

To start off, lets understand what Yeast Infection actually is. The scientific term for Yeast Infection is Candidiasis, though due to slang it has adopted the name Yeast Infection and “thrush”. Because of the nature of Candidiasis, the severity of the condition ranges from simple cosmetic blemishes to life-threatening diseases. However, the general victims of Yeast Infections usually suffer from inflammation and discomfort in the region.

So, what exactly causes yeast infections? Yeast infection is contagious, yet also vaginal exposure to external substances can also promote infection. Some common causes are detergents or douches, or built up lactic acid. To simplify that, keep things away from that area that shouldn’t be there.

Lets understand what Yeast Infection actually is.

There are four widely-accepted ways to treat yeast infections naturally. They are.

  • Yogurt. Yogurt is a natural enemy of yeast. It can be eaten or applied to the vagina with a tampon that has been dipped in yogurt. Be sure to use a plain and unsugured yogurt as sugar will only make the infection worse. As an alternative to the tampon, you can rub the yogurt on the outside of your vagina.
  • Garlic. Yes, garlic is a big enemy of yeast. You can actually get almost immediate relief from yeast infection itching by inserting a garlic tab or clove into the vagina every few hours as required for soothing relief.
  • Apple-cider vinegar. This, too, can be either taken internally or used externally. If you choose to use it externally, do not apply it to your vagina in full strength. It will burn like you can’t believe. Instead, add a cup of it to your bathwater and then take a nice, long bath. And do not use white vinegar as it will actually feed the yeast.
  • Oil of oregano. This herb is seriously potent against yeast. Take it internally, daily, according to directions. Be sure the oregano oil you choose has a high carvacrol content as this is the active ingredient that will help cure the infection.

Now, it is important that you find the right cure. As usual, doctors usually jack up the price of medicine by 3 times the value. Personally, after trying many different products, I have to recommend Yeast Infection Secret, because this company sells almost the exact same medicine as normal hospitals, but for one third of the cause. Not to mention that you can help additional help through customer service, while to get a follow up at the doctors it would cost you a lot for a little time. I hope this cleared up confusion about Yeast Infections.

Superfoods to Stomp out a Cold

Jun 11, 2008 in Health

Superfoods to Stomp out a Cold

Not only do healthy, nutrient-dense foods nourish your body and help the cells grow and reproduce, they also help arm your body’s defenses to ward off attacks from germs that cause colds.  Low-fat meats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and whole grains all play a part in preparing your body to do battle.

Another important component of your anti-cold defense system is water.  When your body is dehydrated, it’s at an increased risk of germs latching on and not letting go. So be sure to drink plenty of water and decaffeinated drinks to help your body stay hydrated and ready.

Just one cup of yogurt a day may work to keep the gastrointestinal track healthier, which can help ward off colds.  It has to be yogurt with live cultures, as this is the key ingredient that helps keep the GI track ready to rumble. And an added bonus to eating yogurt - recent studies suggest regular dairy consumption helps you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Garlic contains allicin, an antibiotic that has been shown to prevent complications from a cold in some research. Garlic can be added to many of your favorite dishes to spice them up and help you suit up to do battle against cold germs.
It’s been said an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Well, so can an orange. One orange a day provides your recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. Oranges are also abundant in flavonoids, which helps your body’s cells regenerate and stay healthy and strong. Green bell peppers are the vegetable family’s best vitamin C source. Add them to a salad, or simply slice one up and eat it raw.  Flavonoids are also found in peppers.  You may even want to prepare a green pepper dip seasoned with garlic for an added germ-kicking effect.

Lean ground beef, especially when prepared with a bit of garlic, can maintain cell health and fight off illness. It’s a good source of protein, selenium and zinc, and when eaten with a bit of tomato, is a great defense during cold season.

Superfoods that Help Heartburn

Jun 11, 2008 in Health

Superfoods that Help Heartburn

Heartburn and indigestion make millions of people miserable. Continuous digestive problems can be a symptom of overeating, bad food choices or something more serious.  Thankfully simple changes in the foods you eat can provide relief.

A number of foods can trigger heartburn or indigestion by relaxing the band of muscles at the end of your esophagus so it can’t keep out stomach acid. By avoiding spicy foods with black pepper or chili powder, garlic and raw onions, citrus foods like tomatoes, oranges, and grapefruit, fried or fatty foods, alcohol or anything with caffeine such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, heartburn and indigestion can be greatly lessened or avoided.

For overall healthy digestion and to minimize acid reflux, make sure you get plenty of fiber from a variety of vegetables, non-citrus fruits, and whole grains. Drink enough fluids to help your body absorb important nutrients and lubricate food waste, and use low-fat methods when cooking. Try drinking herbal chamomile tea after dinner or before bedtime, as it’s believed to have a calming effect on the stomach.  Smaller but more frequent meals can also help decrease heartburn and indigestion episodes.   Be sure to eat your meals and snacks in a calm, relaxed atmosphere where there’s little if any noise or distractions. Wear properly fitting clothing that isn’t tight in the waist and abdominal area, and don’t lie down immediately after eating a meal.

Make your morning meal oatmeal. It’s high in fiber, low in saturated fat and cholesterol and when combined with skim milk, gives you a calcium-charged boost to your day. By adding blueberries or raisins you’ll be adding some extra iron and potassium into the mix for a well-balanced meal.

You can’t beat turkey if you want a lean, nutrient-packed protein source that’ll be easy on your stomach. Turkey is high in niacin, which helps lower cholesterol levels in the blood.  Chicken without the skin is also a terrific low-fat source of protein. Both are easy to cook either indoors or out.

Apples and grapes are low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, and are a great non-citrus fruit choice for vitamin C and fiber.

You Really Are What You Eat

Jun 11, 2008 in Health

You Really Are What You Eat

Recent dietary research has uncovered 14 different nutrient-dense foods that time and again promote good overall health.  Coined “superfoods,” they tend to have fewer calories, higher levels of vitamins and minerals, and many disease-fighting antioxidants.

Beans (legumes), berries (especially blueberries), broccoli, green tea, nuts (especially walnuts), oranges, pumpkin, salmon. soy, spinach, tomatoes, turkey, whole grains and oats, and yogurt can all help stop and even reverse diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and some forms of cancer. And where one might have an effect on a certain part of the body, it can also affect the health of other body functions and performance, since the whole body is connected.  With these 14 foods as the base of a balanced, solid diet, weight loss gimmicks and other fly-by-night programs can become a thing of the past in your life.

Conversely, the ill-effects of an unbalanced diet are several and varied. Low energy levels, mood swings, tired all the time, weight change, uncomfortable with body are just a few signs that your diet is unbalanced.  An unbalanced diet can cause problems with maintenance of body tissues, growth and development, brain and nervous system function, as well as problems with bone and muscle systems.

Symptoms of malnutrition include lack of energy, irritability, a weakened immune system leading to frequent colds or allergies, and mineral depletion that can trigger a variety of health concerns including anemia.

And since the body is connected, realizing that an unhealthy body will result in an unhealthy spirit only makes sense.  When we nourish our body with these superfoods and complement them with other nutrient-dense and healthy fresh foods, our spirit will be vitalized and healthy as a direct result.

Many modern diets based on prepackaged convenience foods are sorely lacking in many vitamins and minerals, which can affect our mental capacities as well, and cause irritability, confusion, and the feeling of ‘being in a fog’ all the time.

Superfoods can be the basis of a sound, healthy, nutritious solution to curing many of these ailments and more.

What is Laser Acupuncture?

Jun 10, 2008 in Health

What is Laser Acupuncture?

In the United States there is currently an obsession with research that needs to go into the study of acupuncture in order to realize just how beneficial the process can be. However, even before the full benefits of acupuncture could be realized within the United States the whole process of the therapy is about to change. Even though this change has not been real widespread, one of the major changes within the acupuncture world is the fact that lasers have now been added to the already overly-complicated technique of acupuncture. There are many reasons why lasers have been added to the process and some of those reasons will be focused on within this article. But the fact of the matter remains that the whole face of acupuncture has changed, but whether it has been for the better or for the worse still remains to be seen.

Why Lasers Were Added

There are many theories on the issue why laser acupuncture evolved into the United States, but the most popular theory and perhaps the most reasonable one, states that laser have been added to the acupuncture process in order to be more accurate in the treatments of patients. For example, many people already know that sticking and pricking needles into a body can be a hard process to duplicate over and over. However, with lasers that are added to the process they can be pricked into the body through the use of a laser beam and computer. The laser beams are not only beneficial to the whole process of acupuncture because the lasers can be adjusted to each individual’s body, but they have also been beneficial because it is the quickest way to undergo acupuncture therapy.

How Lasers Have Changed Acupuncture

Many traditional people who have been advocates of acupuncture for quite some time in the Chinese culture have said that the addition of laser therapy to acupuncture techniques have been great for the growing number of people that have shown an interest in the healing technique. On the other hand, there have also been acupuncture professionals who have said that combining two totally different forms of therapy should never have been done. The main reason that laser therapy is guarded against when using acupuncture is the fact that the whole acupuncture process has not yet been mastered by many people in the United States. This addition to the whole process will not only complicate matters, but it will also make the original procedure of acupuncture a lot more difficult to perform.

All things considered, though, it is definitely true that many people agree that laser therapy, combined with acupuncture therapy, are two totally different therapies that should or should not have been added together. Even though there are plenty of differentiating opinions on the matter, what matters most is whether the process of acupuncture and the effectiveness of the treatment is any different with the lasers added. Many people say that it has taken away the effectiveness of acupuncture, but it is ultimately up to the person to realize whether or not acupuncture has changed!

The Risks of Acupuncture

Jun 10, 2008 in Health

The Risks of Acupuncture

If you are one of the traditional skeptics of the acupuncture therapy then you are definitely not alone. Because acupuncture has not been embraced wholly by any parts of Western society, members of America and others in the West remain skeptical at least, and hopeful at best, at the therapy of acupuncture that has been claimed by Chinese culture to be the miracle cure of all cures for all things that attack the body. Even though acupuncture may be great for those in Chinese cultures where this process of medication and healing is still routinely sought after and practiced today, there are real and definite risks of acupuncture that must be spoken out about.

Acupuncture Risk #1: Accidental Shared Needles

The first thing that one needs to be on the lookout for if he or she insists on using acupuncture for his or her main bodily therapy is the fact that accidents are always happening and can even happen in the acupuncture field. Many people claim that some of the accidents in acupuncture therapy may arise when there are the accidental incidents of sharing of needles. These occasions may not, and probably do not, happen on purpose, though. However, the sharing of needles may take place when one session of acupuncture ends and other one begins right after. Not all of the needles may get thrown away for one reason or another and then they may be accidentally re-used on the next person. Of course, everyone should know that this is very dangerous and should never be done, but it is just one of the many risks associated with acupuncture therapy.

Acupuncture Risk #2: Pricking of the Body

Another risk that one needs to consider before delving into the practice of acupuncture is the fact that many people are able to be pricked so easily by the jabbing of needles. Even though practitioners of acupuncture usually take very good care not to injure anyone when performing the actual therapy, as mentioned earlier accidents can always happen for the first time. But I’m sure that the stabbing of individuals due to the sharpness of the acupuncture needles is not the first time the issue has come up. Needless to say, the pricking of the body by acupuncture needles should be just another concern on the acupuncture list.

Acupuncture Risk #3: Getting Treated

Even though getting treated by acupuncture should not be feared by any means, it is precisely who is treating you that should be feared. With all the identity thefts and deceitful things that now routinely go on in the United States, there is nothing from stopping someone from just acting like they know how to perform acupuncture therapy. Furthermore, even though somebody says that they are certified, how often does one truly scrutinize the accreditation documents that are shown to them?

All of these things are risks associated with having acupuncture therapy done, and all that needs to be done is a little due diligence to make sure everything is okay. Even though acupuncture is not a bad therapy in itself, there are always the bad eggs that’ll spoil the whole batch!
