XM Radio Versus Sirius Radio

Both XM radio and Sirius radio companies count on money from the sale of subscriptions. Since subscribers want to listen to quality radio programs, the two satellite companies have focused on offering great program content. Each company now tends to “specialize” in a selected entertainment niche.

Each of those selected niche specialties falls within the scope of one type of radio entertainment. A comparison of XM and Sirius radio thus calls for a close look at the niche specialties for each company.

Sports fans have discovered that XM radio provides excellent coverage of major league baseball, professional golf and hockey games sponsored by the NHL. Sirius radio offers better coverage of events sponsored by the NBA, and games sponsored by the NFL. Both companies air sports competitions that pit one university team against a second university team.

Both XM and Sirius advertise heavily the programs sponsored by big-name entertainers. XM sends out programs that include entertaining words and/or music from Bob Dylan, Oprah Winfrey and Al Franken. Dealmakers at the Sirius Radio Company have set the stage for creation of programs with these hosts: Martha Stewart, Steven Van Zandt, Jimmy Buffet, Howard Stern and Eminem.

In the area of radio music, the listener generally finds different tunes coming from the XM and the Sirius satellite radio stations. In addition to “XM Chill” and “Starbucks XM,” the music on XM tends to reflect the music of by-gone eras. XM 4 plays music from the 40s. XM 5 revives the pop and rock during the 60s, 70s and 80s.

In contrast to XM radio, Sirius radio plays more hip hop and R and B music. Radio listeners who subscribe to Sirius find that they can view the artist and song information, while they listen to the music streaming from the radio. Both XM and Sirius satellite radio have given business owners a low-cost way to stream pleasing music into elevators and work areas.

One new service being offered by Sirius satellite radio may help to distinguish that company from its competitor (XM radio). That service is called “Backseat TV,” and it caters to the needs of large, mobile families. After a family subscribes to “Backseat TV,” then the family car might qualify for special programs on a TV screen, a screen in the backseat.

Not every car company comes equipped to handle a rear video screen. Only cars from the Chrysler OEM factory units currently have the ability to offer such video hook-ups. Children who ride in such cars can hope that their parents will subscribe to the new Sirius service. Then those children can plan to watch programs from these channels: “Nickelodeon,” “Disney Channel” and “Cartoon Network.”

While the Sirius service can not provide a screen for front seat passengers, it can send programmed music into the front seat. Adults up front can share with children the music in their videos programs.

Satellite Radio

Before the appearance of satellite radio stations, the transmission of radio signals relied on the abilities of ground-based transmitters. When wireless signals enter the air from ground-based transmitters, then those signals show a drop-off in power, as they travel great distances. Radios receiving such signals, fail to get good reception of any radio program that has not come from a local radio studio.

The companies that now operate the satellite radio networks have offered a way to ease the strained ear of the radio listener. Each satellite radio program is beamed-up to a satellite in the space. That satellite then sends the radio signals to receivers on the ground. That allows for clearer transmission of each radio program

The satellite radio stations have given their receivers the ability to buffer each incoming signal from space. In that way, the receiver can call for a back-up signal, should it somehow loose the satellite signal. The existence of the buffering system helps to insure transmission of a clear radio signal.

Once the satellite radio stations had found a way to put dozens of different channels in a single bandwidth, then they began to look at the contents of the projected radio programs. The present-day satellite radio programs offer listeners a wonderful mix of music, news, sports and talk radio.

The operators of satellite radio followed the model presented by cable television. They chose to operate without dependence on advertising money. Instead, they chose to search for subscribers,, listeners who were willing to pay for a clearer signal and a better quality radio program.

Worldspace Corp., a firm based in Washington, D.C. offered the first demonstration of satellite radio capabilities. It used a satellite to send radio programs to listeners in Asia and Africa. Now XM and Sirius sell subscriptions to radio listeners in the United States.

As satellite radio evolved from the system used by Worldspace to the system used by XM and Sirus, the needs of the radio listener entered the picture. The radio listeners in the U.S. are often on the move. Their signal has been designed to reach such roving listeners.

Satellite radio has now become an integral part of society’s total communication system. The operators of those subscription services sell stock in their companies. Financial experts report on the fiscal soundness of those same companies.

At the same time, other media companies cover any controversy raised by those who make announcements on a satellite radio program. Such announcements now reach the ears of thousands of listeners. Such announcements can not be overlooked.

Indeed, the degree to which satellite radio has added to the enjoyment of listening to the radio can not be overlooked. Now some automobile manufacturers even promise to put satellite radio in the cars that are coming out of their factories. Technology experts make a careful study of the offerings from the two competing subscription services.

Some of those experts have felt ready to share their expertise with others. They have offered to guide radio listeners, listeners planning to choose a satellite radio service.

How to Choose Satellite Radio

Fifty years ago, radio listeners could not pick and choose where they wanted to listen to the radio. If they were indoors, they had to have radio plugged into an electric outlet. Some mothers struggled to work on a kitchen counter that also contained a radio, in order to hear the latest weather report. The advent of the transistor radio eliminated their need to work on a crowded kitchen counter.

Today the availability of satellite radio allows almost anyone the enjoyment of a radio program. For some people, it feels like radio listeners now have too many choices. Some consumers express confusion about decisions that relate to selection of a special device, a device that’s equipped to provide satellite radio programs.

So then, how does one choose a satellite radio? There can be no one answer that fits every radio listener. Each of the various devices available provides the radio listener with a different way to listen to a subscription service. The consumer must choose the satellite radio system that best fits his or her needs.

Some devices are described as “plug and play” devices. They are mobile devices. They store a certain number of program hours, and they allow the listener to enjoy those stored hours of a satellite program. Many such “plug and play” devices come with a car kit, allowing them to be placed in a car.

When a consumer has chosen to put a satellite radio in a car, the clarity of the signal depends on the availability of certain other devices. Anyone who’s tempted to choose a satellite radio system for the car should take the time to learn about those other devices. A cradle, an antenna, a D.C, power adapter, and vent and deck mounts can all insure the production of a clear radio signal from a satellite car radio.

Of course, not every radio listener owns a car. That explains why many radio listeners choose a satellite radio system that fits in the palm of the hand. Such handheld devices have build-in antennas. They bring satellite radio programs to the ears of joggers, walkers and beach goers.

For a relatively brief period music lovers struggled with choosing between the purchase of a handheld satellite radio system, and purchase of an iPod. They knew that possession of any iPod would allow them to listen to stored music files. Now some of the handheld devices give the music lover the chance to listen to both: music from the downloaded files and also music from a satellite radio program.

Car owners who choose a satellite radio device that is intended strictly for use in an automobile need to make a second decision. They need to choose between a radio package and a set of transformative accessories. Some car owners have purchased a satellite radio package that matches the brand of a factory radio. Other car owners have decided to use a tuner or an adapter, in order to combine reception of a satellite signal with reception of ground-based signals.

How Does Satellite Radio Work?

In the mid-1970s, one young female graduate student was driving across Texas. She wanted to listen to the Spanish music coming from the various ground-based stations within the state. The signals from each station could travel only about 30 or 40 miles. Eventually, that young lady found that her car radio would pick-up only cowboy music.

The satellite radio does not get a signal from a ground-based transmitter. Each satellite radio receives a digital radio signal. That digital signal comes from a communications satellite. The satellite picks-up and returns to earth whatever signals it has received from the ground. The signal from a satellite can reach a much wider area than a signal carried over the land.

When a car owner has a satellite radio in his or her car, then that radio can play music from the same channel throughout an entire cross-county trip. Should the car owner want to listen to a talk radio host, the car owner does not need to fear the a sudden lapse in the message from coming from the satellite radio.
Due to the strength of the satellite radio broadcast, each broadcast can be “heard” by receivers that have no link to a satellite dish. At times, the curvature of the earth can put limits on the reach of a satellite radio signal. That problem is generally solved by the launching of two to three satellites, all of which fly above a single continent.

A second problem that can interfere with transmission of a satellite radio signal can take the form of a large and tall object. A big building might seem to stand in the way of a clear transmission in an urban setting. That problem has been solved, through the use of broadcast boosters. Such boosters allow signals to be made available to radio listeners, even when that signal runs into a tall building.

The availability of boosters gives local radio stations the capacity to broadcast clear and uninterrupted traffic reports. That is especially important, when traffic converges on a possible signal obstruction. Think, for example about how a tunnel might create traffic problems, and how it might also interfere with transmission of a radio signal. The presence of the boosters does away with the potential difficulty.

The earlier development of the boosters displays the extent to which skilled engineers can improve upon the exiting satellite radio signals. No doubt research into the field digital radio signals will facilitate the creation of even more technological advances, advances that can improve delivery of satellite radio programs.

At this point, it is difficult to predict how satellite radio might change in the near future. The two major satellite radio companies, XM and Sirius, are thinking about becoming a single company. They await approval from the U.S. government, which does not want to entourage the creation of a monopoly.

Meanwhile, the public continues to enjoy the new additions to the family of services offered by the satellite radio companies. Sirius now advertises the availability of its “Backseat TV.” The children who now watch that TV might find that their own children reap the benefits of even better and more sophisticated satellite radio services.

Buy Satellite Radio Subscription

After a radio listener decides to buy a satellite radio subscription, that listener usually purchases a basic monthly plan. The cost of such a plan varies, but it can be as little as $12.95 per month. What then does the radio listener get, after buying that radio subscription plan?

The operators of the various satellite radio services provide their subscribers with diverse and rich programming. The radio listener who has chosen to buy a satellite radio subscription enjoys the freedom of hearing voices and music from hundreds of different radio channels. Those channels carry an array of different programs.

About one third of the channels broadcast news, sports, talk radio and entertainment programs. About one fifth of the channels deliver information about traffic conditions and weather predictions. A large number of channels broadcast programs that appear on a “playlist,” Subscription holders can select from that “playlist.”

The holder of a satellite radio subscription does not need to sit by a radio, in order to hear all of the program contents that are streaming to earth from a satellite in the sky. Any computer owner who decides to buy a satellite radio subscription can sit back and enjoy the programming that is streamed onto his or her Internet.

A few groups now have an added reason to buy a satellite radio subscription. Recently, the FCC indicated that it would initiate closer oversight of ground-based radio and TV programs. Some radio stations new worry about chances that heavier fines might be imposed on certain stations, stations that mistakenly broadcast a profane word.

The older residents of Red Lion, PA might recall another time when the FCC played a major part in shaping the direction of broadcasted information. During the 1960s, one Red Lion station sought to skirt around a request from the FCC, The FCC had asked all radio stations to give some air time to Fred Cook.

Fred Cook was the author of a book titled Goldwater: Extremist on the Right. That book had been attacked by the announcer on one local Christian station. The same station had refused to give Cook any air time. That refusal did not go unnoticed, or uncontested.

Eventually, the case made its way to the Supreme Court. There the Justices sided with Cook. They indicated that one station could not hold a monopoly on the use of the air waves, in order to put out its particular views.

Now, more than forty years later, the FCC has again sought to put its stamp on the nature of what passes trough the radio ground transmitters. A number of people object to the rulings made by the FCC. In order to voice their objection, they have joined together to buy satellite radio subscriptions.

As a result, the sales figures for the subscription sales have risen, and the value of the satellite radio stock has increased. Such developments paint a rosy picture for the future of satellite radio programming. They also suggest a growing demand for satellite radio subscription services.

What Is Voice Over IP?

What exactly is voice over IP or VoIP? Voice over IP or VoIP is another method to make phone calls. All you need is a computer with Internet connection, a microphone, speakers, and you can easily communicate using VoIP. If you have a mobile phone or telephone set you can also utilize voice over IP with a paid service away from your computer. Many people use VoIP for long-distance calls and its low cost. Voice over IP or Voip transmits the voice or sounds you create over the standard Internet infrastructure using the IP Protocol. This process allows you to make calls without paying for more than you normal monthly Internet bill. There are even various VoIP services and applications such as Skype, Gizmo, and VoIPStunt that allows users to make free VoIP calls. Although, to use voice over IP away from your computer requires a paid service it is inexpensive compared to standard services VoIP can cut international calls costs down by virtually 90 percent. VoIP helps to simplify and organize and individuals life. It gives a person the ability to access their office from home using voice over IP. This new technology was originally developed to provide communication in any place around the world. People are using VoIP at home and in their businesses. VoIP can eliminate your need of a fax machine because it is so productive. VoIP is capable of combining different data types simplifying routing and signaling to be more flexible. VoIP is a great technology based method of improving communication.

Voice over IP has five major abilities that add to the reason of its growing popularity. The first major ability of voice over IP is that it allows you to transmit more than one telephone call down the same broadband-connected telephone line. You can add an extra telephone line to any home or office with VoIP. This can increase many VoIP users productivity without increasing their monthly bills. The second ability voice over IP has is extra features without the extra costs. VoIP extra features include 3-way calling, call forwarding, automatic redial, and caller ID. Traditional phone companies charge users extra for these kind of features unlike VoIP. The third ability voice over IP has is to make secure calls using standardized protocols. VoIP can easily encrypt and authenticate the data stream giving you a strong transmission. The fourth ability voice over IP has is its location independence. You are not limited with voice over IP like you are with standard phone companies. It only requires an Internet connection to gain access to a VoIP provider. Voice over IP phones can practically function from anywhere with a stable Internet connection. The fifth major ability voice over IP has is integration with other services. You can integrate a number of other services available over the Internet including message or data file exchange during conversation, video conversation, audio conferencing, address book managing, and passing information about friends or colleagues availability online to others.

Cheapest Way to Get Long Distance Calling (Through the Net)

Millions of people from all over the world use long distance calling to communicate with friends, family, and business contacts. Long distance calling has become part of everyday life but the standard methods used to communicate are creating debt. All long distance calls carry long distance charges that rapidly multiply as the time goes by. Many people if not paying close attention can within an hour of conversation rack up a $500 or more long distance bill added to their normal monthly bill. People dread opening up their phone bills to see the new additional long distance calling charges listed. This type of situation causes many regular long distance callers to seek a less expensive method. Cell phones was the first alternative long distance callers tried. The offer of free long distance for a specifically priced bundled plan appeared to be tempting but as time progressed and cellular providers became competitive this option is not the cheapest method to call long distance. Standard phone companies now offer the same priced bundled plans that cellular providers offer making it equal in price. It is just as easy to run up a cell phone bill calling long distance as it is using a standard phone. People who want long distance calling without racking up heavy bills and additional charges seek other methods such as long distance calling through the net.

The cheapest way to get long distance calling through the net is by utilizing VoIP and software applications. You can make free Internet calls through certain software applications that are available to be downloaded for free. There is not a cheaper way to get long distance calling than through the net using VoIP and various software applications and services. VoIP transmits your voice or conversation over the standard Internet infrastructure using the IP Protocol. This is the cheapest way to get long distance calling through the net because there are no additional charges and usage is practically free. Although some service applications may charge the cost is so low it still remains the cheapest alternative for long distance calling. VoIP services and applications such as Skype, Gizmo, and VoIP Stunt permits users to make free long distant calls. You can not have a cheaper price than for free. Calling through the net is a relatively new technology but very inexpensive and convenient. It allows you to make long distance calls without paying more than your normal monthly Internet bill. Many people have extremely low monthly Internet bills under $20. This makes calling through the net truly the best alternative for cheap long distance calling. Skype is one of the most popular of the cheapest ways to get long distance calling through the net. The Skype service allows you to make calls at no charge as long as you have a stable Internet connection. Voxware is another form of Internet calling software available to give you the cheapest way to call long distance through the net also.

Advantages & Disadvantages Of VoIP

VoIP the technology which allows users to make phone calls using the Internet has a variety of advantages suitable for most individuals needs. One of the biggest advantages of VoIP is the amount of money you can save. Voice over IP helps reduce the cost by low flat rate charges or free usage. The user never has to worry about high phone bills again. VoIP makes communication easier and affordable allowing users to connect with others across the world of the same low locked in rate. Another advantage of VoIP is how it simplifies the exchange of data so messages, documents, and videos can be easily shared. Portability is also an advantage of VoIP. For travelers, busy business executives, owners, and active individuals VoIP’s portability is perfect. As long as you have a stable Internet connection you can always keep your line of communication open with VoIP. All you need is a headset or IP phone in your bag and you can stay connected no matter where you go. There are no roaming or expensive long distance charges to worry about. VoIP provides the advantage of versatility. You can communicate at the office or home using VoIP PC to PC. It is also possible for you to accept calls from standard lines and mobile phones. VoIP also permits users the ability of phone to phone voice over IP service as well. Having your own phone number and being capable of international networking is a huge advantage. The variety of features are an advantage of VoIP. The same features you pay extra for with standard line phones and cell phone service is available with VoIP at no additional charge. You can send pictures, documents, use call forwarding, voicemail, three-way calling, caller ID, and call waiting. VoIP is a great solution for people wanting to stay in contact with business associates, friends, and family.

The relatively new technology of VoIP may not be the perfect answer for everyone. Using the cutting edge technology of VoIP for some users may have some disadvantages. Sound quality can be a major disadvantage of VoIP. People who do not like the possibility of uneven muffled sound from time to time depending on your connection may be unhappy with VoIP. VoIP is notorious for having delay and echo during phone calls. There are still several bugs in the system because it is rather new. Another disadvantage of VoIP is the constant need of Internet connection and dependence of functionality of voIP software. If you do not have both running VoIP does not operate smoothly. The possibility of power interruptions is a major disadvantage of VoIP is your only source of communication you cannot call for assistance. A serious disadvantage of VoIP is the lack of emergency call options. Unlike standard phone lines VoIP can not be traced back by 911 call centers. This makes it very difficult for them to locate and assist you in time. VoIP is not meant for everybody.
